Bakelite Jewelry

Leo Bakeland was born in Belgium in 1863 and came to the United States in 1889. After selling the rights of his invention of Velox to George Eastman of Eastman Kodak for one million dollars He started to look for a material to be used to insulate wire and he mixed carbonic acid and formaldehyde to form the first plastic. He introduced Bakelite to the general public in 1909 at a chemical conference. He then founded the General Bakelite Corp.
